Plaster Repair

Old plaster can become damaged for many reasons, including household accidents, repair work and seismic activity. Luckily, you are in good hands and we know how to professionally patch up walls before you can get on with projects such as painting or tiling. Below, I have outlined the steps of what is needed in terms of equipment in order to get your plaster wall fixed.

Tools And Materials We Use

Before we get started, we make sure we have the right tools and materials available, such as:

Trowel

Plaster base coat

Liquid bonding agent

Paintbrush

Mesh tape with an adhesive backing

Drywall knife

Veneer plaster

Joint compound

220 grit sandpaper

Plaster Patching Process

1. Our carpenters start the job by using the trowel to spread plaster base coat over the exposed lathe in the wall. This base coat will be covered by other materials later on, so imperfections shouldn't be noticeable in the finished product. We then allow the base coat to cure.

2. Next, we use a paintbrush to apply liquid bonding agent to the base coat. We apply mesh tape over the patched area. The tape should extend beyond the perimeter of the base coat.

3. By using a drywall knife, we spread veneer plaster over the patch. The veneer plaster will cover the patch entirely so the mesh tape is no longer visible. We then wait for the veneer plaster to cure.

4. To continue on, we spread joint compound over the veneer plaster and wait for the joint compound to cure.

6. Last but not least, we use sandpaper to lightly sand down the patch. Once the sanding is finished, the patch is flushed against the surface of the wall and should no longer be visible.

Once the patch has been sanded to a smooth finish, the wall can be repainted. Our experts recommend to paint the wall with primer first. Once the primer has dried, we normally apply two coats of paint over the primed wall. After this is done, there should be no visible evidence that the wall was ever damaged.
